Open Water events

FAQ’s

Is open water safe? We have lifeguards and experienced registered coaches at every session. All sessions are fully risk assessed and are in line with Swim England guidance.

Do I need to be a club member?  Yes. All swimmers should be able to confidently swim 800m and be registered with Swim England for insurance purposes.

Do I need to wear a wetsuit on the day? We would recommend all swimmers wear a wetsuit – they will keep you warmer and safer in the lake. These will be available for hire on the day for £5.

Will there be changing facilities? There are changing rooms but we ask that swimmers arrive ‘beach ready’ in line with COVID regulations.

What do I need to bring? We suggest: goggles, swim hat, footwear (flip flops are ideal) for around the lake, warm clothes that are easy to pull on, warm socks and hat, drink (preferably warm) and a snack for when finished.

Can I bring my family along to watch? We are allowed one adult to spectate per swimmer.

How much does a session cost? It is £15 for the session – this will also include a free swim hat.

Will the water be cold? How do I deal with this? Our coaches will help you to acclimatise to this. We only run sessions when the water temperature is safe.

If I love the session, what can I do next? The team at Hertfordshire open water will be able to signpost you to your nearest Swim England accredited open water coaches and venues in the county. Remember to also keep an eye out for our other events this summer!
